BIS Exposure Visit
Rasayaniki, the Chemical Society of Ramjas College, organized an exposure visit to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Central Laboratory, Sahibabad on 21st February, 2023. As the name suggests, the purpose of this trip was to give students a general idea of working in a laboratory and also to make them familiar with how much effort goes behind maintaining the quality of products that are used in day to day life. Total 30 students from B.Sc. (H) Chemistry 3rd Year registered for this trip. The students left the college at 9 a.m., along with three faculty members namely Dr. Madhu Bala Raigar, Dr. Radha Raman Maurya and Dr. Sharf Ilahi Siddiqui. After reaching the premises, the students were first taken to conference hall, where they were given a brief introduction about the Bureau of Indian Standards and its functioning. The students also learned about standards in various products and industries and what properties are considered while preparing a standard product. Following the introduction, the students were guided throughout the laboratory starting with the water quality inspection department, where they learnt about the various tests that are done to ensure the quality of drinking water like heavy metal detection, radioactive elements testing and testing for microbes. They were also shown a technique which is used to detect heavy metals in water called ICP-OES (Inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry). The team then took the students to the footwear section, which performs various tests to ensure the quality of safety shoes. This department tests the durability and resistance to weariness of various components of safety shoes with multiple tests like the flex test and the drop test. Next was the toys section, where the quality of toys like resistance to washing (soft test), durability, and safety is checked. The students had a brief lunch break. The tour ended with the helmet testing laboratory, where the students were given a brief introduction to the various tests performed on helmets to ensure the safety of the users. The students reached the college premises at around 4 p.m., after which they were dispersed.
