SOCIETIES

Student Faculty Committee

The Student Faculty Committee (SFC) is a statutory body that looks into all academic matters pertaining to the Department. It is a platform for discussing problems and issues relating to classes, tutorials, and all other academic matters. All students and teachers of the Department are automatically members of the SFC. The SFC is required to meet once every term (this is called the SFC General Body Meeting or the SFC-GBM).

At the Department of Economics, in addition to the SFC-GBM each term, there is the additional provision of an SFC Executive Committee. Students from each Class have 2 representatives to the SFC Executive Committee, while there is one Faculty representative for each Class. For 1st, 2nd and 3rd year, the SFC members are the two top-scoring students from the previous academic year.  The Teacher-in-Charge is the ex-officio convener of the SFC.

The SFC Executive Committee meets once every month (on the last working Wednesday of each month) to discuss issues of relevance for each class. This is to ensure regular interface and feedback between students and teachers on academic matters. Students are advised to keep SFC representatives of their class abreast of various academic issues of the class so that these can be conveyed to the faculty in the meetings and timely action can be taken.

The Economics Society

The Economics Society organizes several activities during the year, including freshers’ welcome, outgoing batch’s farewell and seminars by eminent experts  in various fields in economics. Each of these activities is managed by student representatives, assisted by various members of the Faculty. Limited funds for these activities are available from the contribution made by each student as College Fees, and additional funds are usually raised through student contributions as well as sponsorships.

Interested students are also encouraged to start any new activities under the banner of the Economics Society with the help of the student body and the Faculty.

FIELD TRIPS/OTHER PROGRAMS FOR THE STUDENTS
RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS BY THE STUDENTS

The Ramjas Economic Review is a scholarly publication overseen by the Department of Economics at Ramjas College. This journal, as it exists today, embodies a longstanding tradition of over ten years, meticulously nurtured by the department. Its primary objective is to foster and encourage a research-oriented environment within the undergraduate academic sphere. Currently in 2023, in its fifth year of operation, it has the distinction of being one of the only student-run economics journals in the University of Delhi to have obtained an ISSN certification (ISSN: 2582-6093). The Department of Economics encourages students to engage in research work and write research papers. A research grant (Economics Society) was instituted in 2012 to fund research work undertaken by the students. The Ramjas Economics Society Research Project Programme was started in 2012  to provide a platform for students to undertake. survey-based research. Each research project is granted INR 5000 to carry out the project which has to be based on primary or secondary data collected. It is mentored by faculty members of the department. Since then selected students every year from all three years work hard, do research work with a mentor assigned from the department and get the paper published in our annual journal of the Department of Economics, Ramjas Economic Review.

The Department believes that research work by students is an important part of education and has taken initiatives to introduce programmes to foster research. The first Annual Winter Conference was held in 2002 and the first journal was published in 2004.  The editorial board of the department along with the faculty members work hard for almost a year to bring out this issue. Writing quality research papers takes a lot of time and effort, and the young researchers write their research papers for the journal. The journal of the Department of Economics, Ramjas Economic Review is accessible using the below link.
