Introduction
The Department of Physics is one of the oldest and the second biggest Department in the College with expertise in imparting education in the fields of Physics and Electronics. The department tment has produced several scientists, academicians, IT professionals, civil servants and business executives. Every year our students qualify for the post graduate and research programmes of Indian Institute of Science, various Indian Institute of Technology, Management Programmes of countrys top business schools and post graduate courses of Computer Application in reputed universities. Apart from this some of our students also get placed every year through the placement cell of the College.
The Department boasts of a highly qualified faculty who apart from their academic responsibilities are also actively engaged in research in various emerging fields of the discipline. Faculty members are also guiding research students for their PhD degree. Some of the prominent areas of interest of the faculty members are studies in solar cell and solar energy, fabrication and study of solid cell and semiconductor devices, thin films and amorphous materials, high temperature superconductivity, extremely low temperature physics, carbon nanotubes, numerical computational techniques, non-linear dynamics and statistical modeling. Faculty members have published well over 200 research papers in reputed top class referred international journals. The faculty frequently participates, presents papers and chair sessions in National and International Conferences held in India and Abroad.
The department has three fully equipped and well furnished laboratories with the latest state of the art equipment to facilitate deeper understanding of various aspects of Physics and Electronics. Out of these two labs are dedicated to conducting experiments in Physics and one in conducting experiments in Electronics. Some of the important studies undertaken in these labs are designing of electronic circuits, experiments in solar cell, diffraction experiments using lasers, circuit analysis using cathode ray oscilloscope and experiments in solid state physics apart from experiments in mechanics, optics and electricity and magnetism. The third year students of B.Sc (Hons) Physics and B.Sc (Program) Physical Science and Applied Physical Science undertake project work as a part of their curriculum for which there is a fully equipped Physics and Electronics workshop manned by qualified professional. The department has two student societies Bosonics in Physics and “Pulse” in Electronics through which the students are encouraged to conduct academic lectures, seminars, workshops, extracurricular activities and educational trips to various research and experimental facilities of various research organizations.
